Acne can be an annoying little bother for some or a big ugly problem for others. Acne usually first appears during puberty and can show up almost anywhere but most often than not it breaks out on the facial area, the back of the body and the front of the body.
Acne is a skin blemish that arises when pores get blocked and the oil secretion (sebum) inside cannot drain out, making it ideal for bacteria to grow. When this happens, there are several ways acne can manifest on the skin. It can either be inflammatory or non-inflammatory.
Non-inflammatory acne is what we call blackheads and/or whiteheads. Whiteheads are small acne with white spots on top. These occur when the sebum and bacteria are close to the surface. Sometimes these can be so small that they cannot be seen by the naked eye. Blackheads, on the other hand, are acne with black spots on top. These occur when the trapped sebum and bacteria partially breaks the skin. It turns black due to our skin's pigment.
Inflammatory acne is typically what we call "pimples" or "zits". These are acne that become sore to the touch and are big and red. Our immune system is partly to blame for this because our body is trying to fight off the infection by sending in white blood cells to the infected area. One other thing about inflammatory acne is that these can cause scars in some people.
Boys are known to have acne breakouts more often and have more severe acne than girls due to the male hormone Androgen and because boys also have more skin oils than girls. Heredity also plays a big role, so if your mother or father has had bad acne, then you have a high percentage of having it too.
Unfortunately, for some of us, acne does not stop after we graduate from high school. It continues on up to adulthood where it may not break out as much but it still happens. Acne affects 25% of all adult male and 50% of adult female. It is more common than what most people think.
So how do you prevent or treat an acne break out. This has been a long time problem and there are a hundreds if not thousands of products out there. Try to Google the phrase "acne prevention" or "acne treatment" and you'll get a result with over a million pages.
For acne prevention, proper skin care is always advised like using products that do not clog pours and washing your face with a mild soap twice a day. Some say that certain food, like chocolate, caffeine or fat, can cause an acne break out but this is no longer felt to be true based on overall studies.
As for acne treatment, there are home remedies, over-the-counter topical medications and, for severe cases, there are prescription medicines. Home remedies usually involves creating a mixture from items commonly found at home, like honey and cinnamon or orange peels and applying or rubbing them over the acne. Some swear by these remedies but if you prefer to get your treatment from the pharmacy, there are various topical products you can buy to apply on your acne. Most of these products use the active ingredient called Benzoyl peroxide, an anti-bacterial agent.
Acne is a result of your bodily functions and may never be eradicated. You may not be able to totally get rid of acne, but today there is hope of minimizing acne breakouts and having a clear acne free skin.
