Acne - Diet Treatment

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 596

There are many foods that can cause acne. People with acne should change their diet to avoid these foods. If you have acne, you should try to avoid dairy products such as milk, cream, cheese, and yogurt - and meat such as chicken, pork, lamb, and beef. These foods can be hard to digest. This means that there will be a buildup of toxins, because the typical processes will not remove them. Instead, these toxins will be released through the skin - which causes acne. Another matter of concern is the high level of hormones that are in dairy products and meat. These hormones can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum (oil) than normal. When the bacteria and dead skin cells on the surface of the skin are combined with the oil, this combination can clog up the hair follicles. The bacteria can multiply inside of the clogged up hair follicles, which can result in inflammation. The inflammation can eventually lead to acne. Some people may be allergic to dairy products. An allergic reaction to dairy products can result in acne.

People with acne should also avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates such as flour, pasta, rice, and white bread. If these items are a part of your diet, you will likely experience an increase in insulin. This increase in insulin will result in an increase in hormones. As stated above, the increase in hormones will eventually result in more acne.

Any products containing caffeine such as chocolate, tea, and coffee should also be avoided. The caffeine can aggravate your acne by increasing your stress hormones levels.

Now, we will talk about items that people should add to their diet to treat their acne. People with acne should eat more vegetables, fresh fruit, seeds and nuts. In their natural state, these foods will provide all of the enzymes and nutrients that are necessary for proper digestion. If these foods were cooked, many of the enzymes and nutrients would be destroyed. These people should eat five servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit daily. They should eat a salad daily. They can eat dried fruits, and even use fresh fruits to make smoothies and juices. Every day they should eat one tablespoon of sesame, sunflower or pumpkin seeds.

People with acne should drink six to eight glasses of water every day. The water will prevent their skin from becoming dehydrated, which means there will be less dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. This will prevent the formation of more acne, because there will be less dead skin cells available to clog up the hair follicles. An additional benefit of the water is how it can speed up the digestion of food.

People who are taking antibiotics for their acne should eat prebiotic foods, such as onions, artichokes, bananas, and honey, and probiotic supplements. They should do this because the antibiotics they are taking will eliminate the bacteria in their digestive system. Without this bacteria, the body will have problems digesting food and will not absorb as many nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. The body will also suffer from problems with bowel movements. When the body is suffering from these problems, it will have difficulties trying to remove waste. This means that toxins will have to leave through the skin - which can lead to the formation of more acne. Prebiotic foods and probiotic supplements will prevent this from happening because they both can help replenish the bacteria that were lost because of the antibiotics.
